Ampleforth is an excellent location ideal for exploring the stunning local countryside. Guests can visit the North York Moors National Park, Yorkshires Heritage East Coast, or take a day trip to the equally stunning Yorkshire Dales National Park. The City of York and the market towns of Pickering, Helmsley and Malton are also close by. In this part of the England you can still enjoy uncluttered roads and quiet walks in glorious unspoilt countryside. There are beautiful walks directly from the chalets through Forestry Commission woodland and gentle farmland.
The famous Ampleforth College and Abbey are within a few minutes of Carr Lodge. Temporary membership of the Ampleforth Sports Centre (Squash, Badminton, Tennis and Swimming) is available, and the Yorkshire Gliding Club is only three miles away offering both gliding and flying.
Nearby Historic Interest: The area abounds in the most beautiful historic remains of ancient Abbeys, Byland Abbey is only a mile and a half from Carr Lodge. Newburgh Priory in the nearby village of Coxwold claims to be the resting place of the skull of Oliver Cromwell. Literary historians should also visit Tristam Shandy Hall in Coxwold, the home of Isaac Sterne. Only a short drive away is Castle Howard, the famous Van Brugh country house used as the location for Brideshead Revisited.
General Interest: The superb medieval walled City of York is within easy driving distance where a visit to the National Railway Museum would be highly recommended, as well as a whole host of other family attractions. There is a wealth of other nearby attractions including woodcarvers (the most famous being Thompson the "Mouseman" of Kilburn), potteries, museums, Flamingo Amusement Park and the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway. The East Coast of Yorkshire with its quaint fishing villages and beautiful scenery is well placed for a day out. Both game and course fisherman are just spoilt for choice in North Yorkshire with large rivers, lakes and reservoirs in abundance.
